Conservation Basics – 15 March 2021

What’s the best way to care for museum collections?  How can we safely handle museum objects?  What cleaning can we do – and when should we call in the experts?

This online workshop with Charlotte Tomlin from Spencer & Fry looks at both the theory and practice of caring for historic objects.  During the first part of the workshop, there will be a chance to look at the risks to different types of museum collection and to understand how to reduce and manage those risks.

Then, in the second part of the workshop, Charlotte will give a practical demonstration of handling and cleaning techniques that you can use in your own museum.  She will talk through the advantages and disadvantages of different items of equipment and give advice on when to call in the professionals.

This training is aimed at those working or volunteering in museums, who would benefit from an introduction to, or a refresher on, object handling, cleaning and care.
