The Surrey Museums Consultative Committee (SMCC)

SMCC is an umbrella organisation working on behalf of museums in Surrey through a partnership with the district and borough councils of Surrey and Surrey County Council (via Surrey Heritage).

SMCC provides advice, information and practical assistance to anyone connected with Surrey’s museums and develops partnerships and projects with those in tourism, arts, heritage, culture, education, archives, libraries and other stakeholders.

The five core development areas are:

  • Collections Management
  • Education
  • Marketing
  • Visitor Services
  • Museum Management

Crucially, SMCC also manages a grant scheme that Surrey Museums can access – email Haidee Thomas for more information.

SMCC has run many successful county-wide projects, including the Exploring Surrey’s Past website, Surrey Museums MonthSurrey Heroes (Surrey Museums Month theme for 2012, and a ‘History of Surrey in 50 Objects’.

Full meetings of SMCC members occur three times per year, typically in February, May/June and October
The meeting location will move around the member venues in turn, or be held at a mutually convenient or central location in Surrey.

Chairmanship and Secretariat:
There is an Executive Committee, chaired by a Surrey County Councillor and supported by a team of nominated and elected Officers, and Grants Sub-committee. Secretariat support is provided by Haidee Thomas, Museums Learning and Support Officer.
