Job Title: Volunteer and Communications Officer

Hours: 40 hours per week, includes some regular weekend working from March to October.

Reporting to: Marketing Manager

Contract: Permanent

Salary: Up to £21,000 depending on experience

Holiday entitlement: 28 days including Bank Holidays

Pensions: After three months the post holder will be automatically enrolled into the new State Pension scheme with the Museum’s chosen provider “The People’s Pension” unless they instruct otherwise.

Chiltern Open Air Museum is an award-winning independent museum and charity in the Chalfonts, Bucks, with a collection of 37 rescued historic buildings set in 45 acres of beautiful Chilterns landscape. Around 60,000 visitors each year enjoy exploring over 2,000 years of history represented by traditional cottages, rural industries, a tin chapel and a working historic farm with rare breed farm animals.  The Museum has a small team of staff that are supported by around 150 volunteers. The volunteers are an essential part of the team, supporting staff in providing great customer service and assisting on the on-going conservation and maintenance around the Museum site.

We are recruiting a Volunteer and Communications Officer with excellent people and written skills to recruit, manage and develop our team of volunteers. Communication is at the heart of everything we do here at the Museum, whether that is marketing to visitors, recruiting new volunteers or ensuring that our team know that they are part of an engaging and thriving community. The candidate will play a key part in our Communications Team supporting our Marketing Manager in all aspects of promoting the Museum. The candidate will help to fulfill the daily Duty Manager role on a rotational basis including some weekend work. We’re a small team and are looking for a friendly, flexible candidate who is happy to jump in and support the rest of the team if required.

Responsibilities

Volunteering

  • Manage, develop, coordinate and recruit museum volunteers
  • Support museum staff with volunteer management
  • Carry out volunteer inductions, maintaining and updating relevant paperwork including volunteer handbook, procedural manuals and risk assessments
  • Provide support and training for staff and volunteers including shadowing and mentoring provision
  • Provide a point of contact and communication for volunteers from across the Museum
  • Maintain volunteer database and undertake administrative duties including: providing regular communication to volunteers and news updates
  • Develop, organise and support corporate volunteering opportunities
  • Organise staff and volunteer socials to foster a sense of community and togetherness
  • Be the main point of contact for the Friends of COAM
  • Manage the volunteering budget
  • Take part in locking and unlocking rota
  • Participate in weekend Duty Staff rota at least twice a month during the open season

Marketing

  • Help the Marketing Manager promote the Museum and its diverse programme, including events, education and weddings
  • Contribute to the team’s planning of marketing campaigns and help implement them across advertising, social media, PR, radio and print
  • Work with the Marketing Manager, to help grow the Museum’s audiences
  • Assist the Marketing Manager with updating content on Museum website
  • Work with the Marketing Manager to come up with engaging digital content for the Museum’s online blog and social media
  • Ensure marketing signage onsite is kept up to date

Groups & other

  • Develop and administer group bookings with the support of our Visitor Services Assistants
  • Support the team in the delivery of events and other activities across the site
  • Help other key staff to develop and deliver the Museums access policy and guide
