- To support the museum in its aim to rationalise its storage facilities and increase community access to the collection.
Elmbridge Museum is a forward-thinking and creative outreach service dedicated to increasing opportunities for people to engage in arts, culture and heritage throughout the borough. We are looking to appoint an experienced, enthusiastic and confident professional to manage phase 3 of the Effective Collections Project.
The project aims to increase public accessibility to identified objects through their disposal to other Accredited museums. Phase 1 (2011) and phase 2 (2016) were undertaken in consultation with relevant stakeholders in the community and brought about significant benefits for the museum service including: developing understanding of the wider collection; rationalising catalogue records; reducing pressure on storage facilities; and the building of partnerships with cultural institutions across the south east. Through this work the postholder will play a key role in supporting the museum’s next Accreditation return.
This 1 year fixed-term post will progress this important project through managing the disposal of over 2500 objects which were identified during phase 1. The role involves gaining an understanding of the existing documentation and implementing a plan to ensure the project stays on track. This is an exciting opportunity to handle a varied local authority collection including archaeology, costume, domestic items, geology, natural history, rural life objects and toys. You will use your research skills to establish the object provenance and your excellent communication skills to liaise with lenders and donors to agree the best solution to keep objects in the public domain.
You will use your initiative to progress the project, consulting colleagues in the museum team, local networks and professional bodies to ensure best practice is adhered to at all times. You will need a flexible approach to work, a full driving license and access to a vehicle to enable travel throughout the Borough.
This is a 1 year fixed-term contract. The role is part-time 28.8 hours per week.
