Collections and Exhibitions Officer, St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery

Location:St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery, Lymington, Hampshire Salary:£13,800 PT 21 Hours per week Flexi-time Main duties:

Main responsibilities:

Day to day administration of the museum collections to SPECTRUM standards:
• Oversee the collections volunteers, ensuring they have clear programmes of work
• Project manage improvement works at Braxton, our off-site storage facility, ensuring that the collection is better arranged, stored and protected. Rationalise the existing storage, inventory the collection, grade objects and keep track of object movements
• Carry out environmental and pest monitoring
• Administer the acquisitions and disposals process, attending and minuting acquisitions meetings and overseeing the acquisition and registration of new items into the collection
• Manage and update object records in Modes database with additional information, images and locations
• Train and support volunteers to carry out collections-related tasks
• Support projects and initiatives to increase access to the collections
• Communicate collections-related activity and news for inclusion in volunteer newsletter
• Report regularly to Collections Committee on collections activity and policy
• Support Collections and Engagement Officer in ensuring collections policy and plans remain relevant and current
• Manage collections-based website content

Gallery Exhibitions
• Deal with loans documentation and exhibition agreements for lenders/artists
• Provide facilities information for lenders
• Complete copyright and licensing agreements
• Arrange exhibition related transport and storage, liaising with couriers
• Acquire loans insurance valuations
• Condition reporting
• Administrate St Barbe Touring Exhibitions (transport, logistics etc)

• Maintain an awareness of corporate and departmental policies and procedures and apply these in the workplace
• Monitor/maintain suitable environmental conditions in all on-site collections and exhibition areas in compliance with GIS/Accreditation standards.

Support the management of all aspects of the museums’ physical and digital collections, including administration, monitoring and documentation, and support collections-related engagement activity. Support the management and administration of loans-in relating to St Barbe Gallery exhibitions.

Essential Qualifications

• Degree in history or related subject

Desirable Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualification in museum studies or related subject

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• At least three years’ practical experience of working with museum collections
• Collections management experience including an understanding of preventive conservation and collections care issues
• Experience of managing volunteers
• Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
• Excellent time management and organisational skills
• ICT skills including databases, scanning and photographic editing software
• Must have own transport/ability to fulfil travel requirements of the role

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Knowledge of Modes cataloguing system
• Experience of borrowing objects from national, regional and local museums, as well as private collectors
• Experience of public engagement
• Budget management
