Hazards in collections (with a focus on mould)

Event Date:8 February 2021 10:00 am — 8 February 2021 11:30am

Hazardous materials, such as asbestos and mercury, form part of many different types of cultural heritage and can sometimes go unnoticed until a problem arises.  An awareness of hazardous materials in collections, the relevant legislation and where to look for help are essential for good collections management, health and safety and legal compliance.

Mould is one of the most common hazards associated with working in a museum, historic house or site, especially during the winter.  Mould poses risks to health and safety of colleagues and volunteers and has the potential to cause irreversible damage to collections and historic interiors so understanding how to work safely to remove it can reduce risks to people and collections.

Please join Dr Phillippa Mapes and Sophia Oelman, Conservation Specialists with Spencer and Fry, for a two part Zoom training session on hazards in collections and mould.  The first section will look at the hazardous materials that could be present in collections, an introduction to some relevant legislation and sources of further information and the second part of the session will focus on mould in collections; what it is, where it might be present and how to deal with it if it is present.
