Sustainability Project Sharing Day

28th March 2018, Kelmscott Manor, Lechlade, GL7 3HJ

Kelmscott Manor invites museums from around the area to come and find out more about their Arts Council England Resilience funded sustainability project and the Manor's plans, and to hear about what they have learnt.

In a time of political and economic uncertainty and an ever increasing demand on resources, Kelmscott Manor is looking for innovative ways to increase its profile and become more sustainable so that the Manor and its heritage will continue to attract visitors and be maintained for future generations. The day will feature talks about the project and also a talk by a professional fundraiser with a specialism in museums.

Lunch will be provided and a tour of the beautiful property will also be offered. The manor, famed for their cream teas, has been described as an 'utterly beautiful slice of heaven', and this is a day not to be missed!

Trustee Opportunity: Chair of King John's House & Tudor Cottage Trust

Monday 30th April 2018

King John's House & Tudor Cottage Trust Ltd in Romsey seeks a new Chair of the Board of Trustees.

This is an honorary position and would be a good opportunity for someone wishing to develop their experience of working within the heritage sector. The vacancy arises as the present Chair wishes to step down after 13 years in post.  The appointment would be initially for 3 years and would be subject to approval by the Board of Trustees.

The Trust is a small charitable company, limited by guarantee.   It owns King John's House (Grade 1 listed) and Tudor Cottage, and leases King John's Garden and the Heritage Centre from Test Valley Borough Council.   It manages King John's House & Heritage Centre, an accredited museum in the heart of Romsey, manages the Garden and also runs Miss Moody's Tea Room.  The whole complex plays a very active part in the local community.

The Trust employs a General Manager/Company Secretary, a Deputy Manager, a Catering Manager and tea room staff.  It is supported by many volunteers, including stewards, collections team and gardeners.

The Trust meets 4 times a year on Wednesday evenings (February, May, August and AGM in November).

The Chair of Trustees would also be a member of the Management Committee (6 meetings a year on Wednesday mornings), and would be a member of the Board of Executive Directors (which meets as required on an ad hoc basis).

The role of the Chair of Trustees is to:

  • chair meetings of the Trust and the Executive Board
  • play an active part in the ManagementCommittee
  • liaise closely with the Company Secretary/General Manager

This is an ideal time for a new Chair to take over, as we are currently drawing up our next forward plan and preparing our next return for Accreditation.  A new Chair would bring a new perspective as we consider our vision for the future.

The Trust is looking for a Chair who ideally would:

  • have experience of chairing meetings
  • have proven leadership skills
  • be familiar with charity governance
  • be familiar with budgeting, annual returns and business planning
  • have an interest in local history and heritage
  • live within easy travelling distance of Romsey
  • know Romsey, the Test Valley and surrounding area

For further information please email the Company Secretary, Mark Udall:

Application should be made by email, with CV and covering letter explaining why you would like to be a Trustee and what your experience and skills could contribute to the Trust, to the Company Secretary.

Closing date for expressions of interest will be Monday 30 April 2018.

Interviews will take place in the week beginning 7 May 2018.

Supported by Test Valley Borough Council.
