Sharing good practice in Kent & Medway through Museum2Museum sessions
When your museum is carrying out an exciting project or initiative, major refurbishment, working to best practice or receiving national awards, no doubt you want to share this with others as well as pass on any new skills or tips you have learnt along the way? This is exactly what the Kent & Medway Museum Development Programme is supporting through a series of Museum2Museum (M2M) events.
What is Museum2Museum all about?
Holding an M2M session is all about making sure organisational good practice is shared and celebrated within the sector with peers. It is also about giving the organisation the opportunity to take a leadership role in their chosen topic/area of expertise and to offer training, advice and support to their fellow museum colleagues.
It began in February 2014, with a great session led by Tunbridge Wells Museum & Art Gallery who shared their experiences of working with artists to interpret under-used parts of their collection in innovative new ways. The session was a mix of top tips, lessons learned, as well as practical activities. As a result, Museum Manager, Jo Wiltcher was invited to join the Dover Museums & Arts Group (DMAG) network meeting, who were themselves developing a project focused around working with artists. It was great for the DMAG members to hear from a museum peer about their first-hand experiences.
The next M2M took place in March at the Powell-Cotton Museum who focused on Collections Care. Here's what we got up to:
Museum2Museum events coming up:
- Making the most of your Handling Collection, July 2014 (with the Powell-Cotton Museum)
- New Visions for Museums & Public Health, September 2014 (with The Beaney and Tunbridge Wells Musem & Art Gallery)
- Paper & Book Conservation, October 2014 (with Knole House)
- Building Engagement with Schools, TBC 2015
- Evaluation, TBC 2015
If you have a good news story that you want to share, and that can be developed into a training day for your peers, then please get in touch with Sarah.Corn@brighton-hove.gov.uk.
Don't forget, the regional South East Museum Development Programme is holding a SHOWCASE conference event which will be showcasing good practice from across the region. The event is taking place on Monday 10th November at Brooklands Museum, Surrey.
