A successful start to the 'Building Engagement with Schools' project in Kent
The official launch day of the Building Engagement with Schools project, a collaborative project between the SEMDP, the ROH bridge and the SEGfLA kicked off on Wednesday 21st May at the Royal Engineers Museum in Gillingham.
Forteen teachers from 14 primary schools across Kent & Medway joined 4 museums to find out how collections can enhance learning inside and outside the classroom.
The day started with the teacher's being an 'object detective' and getting up close to museum collections and asking key question to our museum professionals. We then heard from Yvonne Lawrence, Learning Services Manager at Chelmsford Museum, how they offer learning to schools, and solved the mystery of the Bellarmine Jug. Judith Carruthers, Museum Learning Consultant had us up and about, getting us to think creatively about telling the story of individual objects in a group, and doing a bit of characterisation.
Feedback from the teachers of the day has been very positive - all plan to take share their experience and ideas with their colleagues and over the summer holiday, further meetings and sharing sessions with the museums will be developed.
