Hampshire Military Museums Network plans for the future
There was a great turnout for last Tuesday's meeting of the Hampshire Military Museums Network (HMMN). Colleagues from the majority of Hampshire's military museums were joined by ACE relationship manager Mary Godwin, your MDO, CPO and representatives from the Hampshire Records Office and National Army Museum for a full-on day of learning, sharing and planning for the network's next year of activity.
The venue was the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, where Director Chris Munns, HMMN Deputy Chair and himself a former Submarine Commander, treated network members to an illuminating tour of HMS Alliance. This was followed by a 'behind the scenes' presentation on the Alliance Project given by Chris with project manager Jason Lowe, telling the story of the £6.75m project to save HMS Alliance, the last surviving British A-Class WW2 era submarine in Europe. Their ‘warts and all’ account shared some of the valuable lessons the team learnt along the way, in areas such as governance, fundraising, project planning and leadership. An illuminating case study for any museum progressing a development project!
After lunch, Mary Godwin provided an overview of future ACE funding opportunties and Katerina updated the network on Catalyst: Inspiring a Culture of Philanthropy.
Then Lucy facilitated a workshop activity to to develop HMMN workplan for 2014-15. This produced lots of excellent ideas for HMMN activities, ample offers of venues and resources and, most importantly, a good number of volunteers to make it happen. A small working group will now progress a series of activities over the next 18 months, starting with an event on 13 November 2014 exploring the impact of changes to funding for Army museums from 2017.
