Security Review 'sharing day'

Accredited museums must obtain expert and objective security advice for collections at least every five years and plan to implement any recommendations.  We are interested to find out if there are museums in west Kent who are due a review of their security arrangements and would benefit from a 'sharing day' with a consultant security advisor to help meet the Accreditation requirement. Please contact joanna.low@brighton-hove.gov.uk to register your interest.

Islamic Art and Material Culture: Subject Specialist Network

The Subject Specialist Network is now on Facebook and Twitter - please join and help them to spread the word!  The hash tag #mapIslam is used for anything related to the mapping project and questionnaire (see below).

This will be treated as a hub for information relating to Islamic art and material culture activities in the UK, so do check in from time to time - but more importantly please share any of your own news items, information on events and activities, or pictures and queries about objects in your collections.

In time there will be a dedicated website, which will disseminate the results of the mapping project that is currently underway.

Save the date
The next study day will be in Leeds on 12th June. This will be an Introduction to Islamic Arms & Armour with Tom Richardson at the Royal Armouries, followed by a visit to the Discovery Centre at Leeds Museum, hosted by Antonia Lovelace, the SSN's rep for Yorkshire and Humberside.
Some travel bursaries will be available to attend.

Another study day is planned towards the end of the year on contemporary art collecting, which will probably take place in Brighton. If you have suggestions or requests for the topics of future study days, please let the SSN know.

Mapping project
Thanks to mapping project researcher, Jenny Wright, this is well underway.  The SSN really appreciate the time you take to respond to these questionnaires - this is their one-time opportunity to map the UK's collections of Islamic Art and Material Culture in a coherent way, and to understand what kind of support museum professionals might need with their Islamic collections. If you need any help, advice, assistance, the SSN is there to help - please contact Jenny.
