Relationship Manager, Museums

Location: Brighton office

Salary: £31,348 per annum plus excellent benefits

Contract: Fixed term until 31 December 2019, working 35 hours per week (Job share will be considered)

An exciting opportunity exists for a museum professional to join the Arts Council England team as a Relationship Manager for Museums in Brighton, working across the South East Area. This will be a 12 month fixed term position to cover a secondment, working with Museums including Brighton, Reading, Buckinghamshire and Oxford.

Key responsibilities

The role involves building and managing strong relationships with NPOs, Museum Development and the wider museum sector. This will include giving feedback on their performance against their business plan, their funding agreement and development work to identify and strengthen particular museum and collection needs.

You will take a joint area lead on museums, working closely with the Relationship Manager, Museums based in the Cambridge office, SRM for Museums and other Arts Council colleagues as a member of the museums national team. You will also contribute to appraising applications to Project Grants and other strategic funding programmes. You will report to the Senior Relationship Manager who holds the area overview for museums.

Key requirements

You will have specific experience of working in the museums sector, along with a good understanding of the museum sector in England and of the current challenges and opportunities facing it. A knowledge and awareness of collections care, museum ethics, accreditation and designation are essential as are knowledge of museum exhibition and programming for the public benefit. You will also have excellent skills in collaboration, influencing and advocacy, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

The successful candidate will have significant experience of engaging with museums services, as well as with cultural organisations. You will need a good understanding of organisational dynamics including business planning, financial reporting, performance management and governance. With a diverse portfolio of external partner relationships to maintain, you will be self-reliant and enjoy both frequent travel and meeting new people. Experience of working with local authority and other strategic partners would also be an advantage. There is an opportunity to apply for this role as a secondment from another relevant organisation or agency.
