Job Opportunity: Assistant Director, Bucks County Museum Trust

Bucks County Museum Trust has a great opportunity for an experienced manager in the heritage sector or related sectors to lead the operations teams in a forward looking and fast developing independent museum with National Portfolio Organisation status. We have an opportunity to restructure and create this new post to work alongside the Head of Exhibitions to ensure excellence in visitor experience and a fantastic visitor offer. The postholder will be joining the museum at an exciting time of development as the Museum is currently working on plans to replace the old galleries with a new permanent gallery telling the story of Bucks.

You will have had significant management experience ideally in the heritage or charity sector including staff and volunteer management experience and will have excellent people and organisational skills. This would be an ideal post for people looking for a career as CEO for medium and large museums in the future.

Job Description

  • Working as part of a senior management team, ensure excellence in delivery of the museum’s daily activities for visitors and delivery of a fantastic visitor experience for every visit
  • Lead, build, train and motivate the Front of House teams and ensure delivery of excellent customer care
  • Maximise income generation through increased gift aid, donations, annual passes for Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery, weddings, special exhibition and event sales and venue hire
  • Lead on sourcing corporate sponsorship and local funding opportunities to support costs of events and exhibitions
  • Manage and develop the annual events programme including some delivery of events in the calendar
  • Review and develop secondary spend in retail and catering, including maximising the use of EPOS system to meet agreed targets
  • Monitor and evaluate visitor numbers and secondary spend reporting results and make recommendations to the Museum Director and staffing teams
  • Be responsible for organisational reporting including pensions, ONS monthly reporting and Gift Aid
  • Participate in museum development plans for the new Story of Bucks Galleries and manage impact on visitor experience
  • Deputise for the Museum Director as necessary
  • Participate in H & S checks and carry out risk assessment and COSHH assessments as necessary
  • Occasional shifts as Front of House Duty Supervisor to cover times when the Front of House supervisors are not available including event events and weddings as necessary
  • Participate in the out of hours alarm call out rota

Person Spec

• Excellent leadership and managerial skills with experience of leading and motivating diverse teams to achieve results
• Outgoing personality with initiative, enthusiasm and drive
• Significant experience in managing visitor experiences, secondary income generation, venue hire, weddings and events in a heritage setting
• Excellent analytical and budgeting skills and ability to work within budgets but not compromise on standards
• Excellent organisational and admin skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills
• Entrepreneurial approach to income generation
• Good IT skills and experience of office IT software usage and use of Social Media
• Good team player and ability to work on own initiative
• Experience and understanding of EPOS systems
• Some experience of working with volunteers and an appreciation of their crucial contribution to the workforce in museums
• Hands on approach and prepared to lead by example
• Good sense of humour

Hours : 37 hours per week with regular weekend and evening working as necessary
