Mentor opportunity: Slough Museum

Wednesday 31st October 2018

Slough Museum is looking for an Accreditation Mentor

The Museum Mentor is a voluntary position supporting Arts Council England’s Accreditation scheme. The role provides an excellent opportunity to share your knowledge and skills and gain additional experience.

Steve Green, Museum Development Manager, says:  “Slough Museum is the only organisation in Slough concerned with the town’s heritage.  We try to give people a reason to love Slough.  Our work in this multicultural town supports social cohesion and we are trying to fill a gap in our collection - the story of the last 5 years, during which time Slough has changed, physically and culturally beyond recognition.  Two years ago we were in dire straits: half of our board had resigned, we lost our core funding, we lost our home and since we have lost our collection store.  In the last year, we have moved our permanent collection into 8 museum pods at The Curve, Slough’s new cultural centre.  We are in the process of moving the collection and volunteer base into East Berkshire College and we are developing the capacity of our trustees, staff and volunteers.  We still face significant challenges, and our future is far from secure, but we have a new sense of optimism and we now see a mentor who can help us with the big challenges of forging a relationship with East Berkshire College, developing and building fundraising activity and re-establishing ourselves at the heart of the community.”

The Museum is hoping to find a mentor who has been involved with museums in educational establishments or someone who understands fundraising from the business sector, virtual museums or who has worked with a struggling local museum developing new ways of operating. For further information about Slough Museum please contact Steve Green on 07919 373294 or steve@bowlesgreen.co.uk
