Security Review 'sharing day'

Accredited museums must obtain expert and objective security advice for collections at least every five years and plan to implement any recommendations.  We are interested to find out if there are museums in west Kent who are due a review of their security arrangements and would benefit from a 'sharing day' with a consultant security advisor to help meet the Accreditation requirement. Permanent, Full time.
Salary scale £19,346-20,883 pro rata with pension and other benefits.


REMLA has a large and varied Designated collection ranging from armoured vehicles, blueprints of military ports to early Ordnance Survey maps, including an extensive photography archive and large ethnographic object collection. It is one of the most important military collections in the country and is currently delivering and fundraising for a series of projects to improve access, enhance gallery interpretation, research and learning opportunities for visitors.

Working to the Deputy Curator (Collections Management) you will be responsible for assisting with all aspects of collections management including the development of the collection, documentation, preservation and storage.
The REMLA Assistant Curator plays a vital role in the care and development of the RE Museum’s Designated Collection. The post holder is a RE Museum charity employee, reporting to the Collections Manager. They will hold supervisory responsibility for junior staff and volunteers.

Responsibilities:


1. Assist with the acquisition of new items for the Collection and implementation of disposal
procedures in line with Museum policy.
2. Manage acquisitions of new items for the Collection, collating paperwork and researching
objects for the monthly Collections Meetings, ensuring values are notified to RE Corps Funds.
3. Assist with all aspects of Collection documentation from initial entry records to long term
classification, cataloguing, retrospective cataloguing and regular audits of object, archive and
library collections.
4. Assist with the management of the Museum’s inward and outward object loans, with a focus on
maintaining and reviewing the outward loans.
5. Assist in the development and delivery of digitisation projects, including the development of on-
line catalogues, the licensing and issue of reproductions and development of the picture library.
6. Undertake the environmental monitoring procedures, maintaining a log of recordings and
liaising with the Deputy Curator (Collections Management) over conservation planning, funding
and implementation.
7. Work to the Collections Care Plan for improvement of the condition of the Collection.
8. Assist with developing and maintaining the Collections Care policies and procedures.

9. When necessary, assist with the design, research and implementation of new interpretation
(galleries, grounds and online) projects and temporary exhibitions.
10. Contribute to the Museum & Library's research services including written and emailed enquiries,
drop in visitors and booked researchers.
11. Give lectures, demonstrations and tours both in the galleries and to outside audiences when
necessary, very occasionally out of hours.
12. Some supervisory responsibilities for volunteers and (occasionally) junior staff.
13. Point of contact and liaise with colleagues regarding work experience placements.
14. The post is also part of the emergency response procedure for the Museum, with contact details
on the Museum call out list and undertakes weekend duties on a rostered voluntary basis.

Personal Job Specification:

Experience

Essential:
 Good Bachelor’s degree in history or related subject, with enthusiasm for military history.
 Previous experience in managing your own work and working on your own initiative.
 Museum or archive documentation and cataloguing including all aspects of object entry,
accession, retrospective cataloguing and digitisation. Knowledge of ADLIB is preferred
 Experience of working with computerised databases and manual catalogue records.
 Experience of working with and handling Museum objects and knowledge of collections care
best practice.


Desirable:
 Experience of volunteer supervision.
 MA in Museum Studies or other appropriate heritage/archive/history post graduate
qualification.
 Demonstrable understanding of Collections Management standards for Museums and Archives.
 Experience of Library indexing systems such as UDC

documentation.
 Self-motivation and an ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines without supervision.
 High written and oral communication skills, including drafting and presenting confidently.
 Confident ICT user.

Desirable:
 Image digitisation and manipulation experience with a knowledge of Photoshop and similar
software.
