JOB PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this post is to backfill for the Curator / Manager during the Development Phase of a recently awarded HLF Grant. This will involve assisting in all aspects of the museum business from day to day operational needs, to collections management, research, exhibitions, audience development and supporting the learning and community engagement officer.
This is an exciting time for Petersfield Museum as it begins a major expansion programme following the purchase of Petersfield Police Station in September 2016.
This expansion will not only include larger display and exhibition areas for existing art, costume and social history collections, it will also allow for the creation of the only publicly accessible study centre dedicated to the renowned poet and writer Edward Thomas.
The overall project has been costed at £2.75 million and we have recently been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund Round 1 pass to deliver our project.
Within this award is funding for the position of an Assistant Curator on a 12-month fixed term contract for four days a week (including one Saturday in three) to support our Curator / Manager whilst they are engaged on work relating to the wider project. The salary will be up to £15,000 per annum (£18,750 pro-rata for a 37.5-hour week).
The role will focus specifically on day to day operational needs of the museum and include collections management, research, exhibitions, audience development and supporting the Learning and Community Engagement Officer.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for an individual who is at the start of their museum career or who is currently studying part time for a Museum Studies post graduate qualification. The post holder will be expected to contribute to all aspects of the running of this growing museum and consequently the successful candidate will gain valuable experience across a broad spectrum of museum activity.
