The following museums are in search of mentors:

  • The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, Great Missenden, Bucks

Award-winning museum near the writer’s former home, housing his archives and displaying his Writing Hut. With probably the only Café Twit in the world! This year is Dahl’s centenary. Last re-Accredited 2014. www.roalddahl.com

  • Stowe House Preservation Trust, Stowe, Bucks

Set in gardens designed by Capability Brown and now run by the National Trust, the house is run by the Stowe House Preservation Trust and is open to the public as well as housing Stowe School. Fine art collections and creative learning programme. New applicant. www.stowe.co.uk/house

  • Ventnor Heritage Museum, Ventnor, Isle of Wight

Local history museum with displays ranging from shipwrecks and smuggling to Karl Marx’s winter holidays. New applicant. www.ventnorheritage.org.uk

  • Sandwich Guildhall Museum

A ‘bijou’ museum with brilliant guides (Trip Advisor) and a 16 th century courtroom. Recently re-Accredited. http://www.sandwichtowncouncil.gov.uk/guildhall/museum.htm

Under the Accreditation scheme a Museum Mentor provides the museum with professional advice and input into policy development and decision-making.

To be a Museum Mentor you must have:

• A minimum of 5 years of working professionally within a museum and with recent experience at a curator/manager level

• Relevant or linked qualification

• A commitment to CPD

Research has shown that you should expect to provide up to 4 days a year support to the museum, including a minimum of two site visits.

If you would like to discuss the role further or express your interest in any of the mentoring opportunities above, please contact Kate Hebditch on 01305 268603 or kate.hebditch@brighton-hove.gov.uk. Museum Mentoring is a voluntary role but it is expected that the mentored museum will pay out of pocket expenses.
