Charity Commission updates CIO Guidance

The Charity Commission has been reviewing the application process for the recently-introduced Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIO) constitutional models, and made the following improvements:

  • The initial amount needed to save an application and get assigned an application number has been slimmed down. The key benefit is that applicants can now access all the questions and prepare answers in advance;
  • Most of the information entered onto the application can now be edited, the only exception seems to be the name of the CIO;
  • The key questions have been reworded and focus on the different elements of public benefit**.  This should speed the Charity Commission’s review process and if answered fully will eliminate the need for follow-up questions.
** The Charity Commission has also reviewed and improved its guidance notes on public benefit so applicants can better link the CIO application questions to their guidance notes.
