Job Opportunity: Assistant Curator, Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment and the Queen’s Regiment Museum, Dover, Kent

A vacancy is to become available in May 2016 for a Museum Assistant Curator, within the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment and the Queen’s Regiment Museum, in the Keep of Dover Castle, Dover, Kent.

  • Salary/Grade: £20,000 pa
  • Term: Permanent
  • Hours: 37 Hours (annualised) Weekend and evening working will be required
  • Leave and other benefits: 25 days and 9 Bank Holidays

Main Purpose of post

  • Assists Curator in operation of museum
  • Opens and closes museum and ensures its security and the security of its stores and exhibits
  • Answers enquiries relating to museum and its collections
  • Monitors condition of collections
  • Manages volunteers and cataloguing of collections
  • Arranges group visits
  • Deputises for Curator

This is a full time post, working independently.  The working hours will be 37 hours per week, with 25 days leave and 9 Bank Holidays (in lieu if required to work), The actual working hours will vary to the season of the year and the English Heritage within the detailed hours of the opening of English Heritage running Dover Castle.

Currently opening hours are April – October 10am to 6pm, each day November from 10 am to 4 pm December – April, weekends only 10am to 4pm.  The Castle is open during some school holiday periods i.e. February Half Term from 1000am to 4pm.  There are a number of volunteers to assist in covering periods which the attendance is not available.

You will be answerable to the Trustees through the Curator.

You will lead, with the Curator, the development, preparation and installation of temporary exhibitions, collections documentation, permanent gallery updates and preventative conservation. You will need to be familiar with ‘MODES’ (training is available) for the recording of the collection along with MS Office functional software, confident in the use of IT and Social Media.
