Kent museums discuss Going Digital with Nick Poole from the Collections Trust

The 'Going Digital in Kent' Collections Trust led session commissioned by the Kent & Medway Museum Development Programme, was fully booked on Thursday 19th March.

Thirty people from across Kent & Medway museums, ranging in size, collection type, and previous digital experiences and skills, came together to hear Nick Poole, CEO of Collections Trust (CT), talk through their new strand of work, Going Digital.

We talked through what the term 'digital' meant to us and what we felt were the digital challenges and opportunities for museums and their workforce.  Nick introduced the CT's Digital Benchmarking tool as well as their simple computer audit check-list.

We discussed various Collection Management Systems (CMS); there were a lot of AdLib users in the room and Sarah Corn, Kent & Medway MDO used this as an oportunity to promote a Peer2Peer session being held in September about Collections Management and Cataloguing in partnership with Maidstone Museum.

It was interesting to hear if and what people do in terms of sharing content online; the majority of participants aimed to make collections available online, and there was a discussion around what and when to make colelctions available - who is the audience, do they want small amounts of information presented in a fun way, or are they reearchers?

Nick also gave us some top tips of where museums can go to buy discounted computer hardware and software as well flagging up 'GLAM Wiki', which helps cultural institutions share their resources with the world through collaborative projects with experienced Wikipedia editors.

The day was an introduction to the Collections Trust's 'Going Digital' programme of work, and it is hoped that the South East Museum Development Programme and the Collections Trust will continue to work together in the coming year to provide more sessions like this on specific 'digital' topics - keep an eye out on the website or in the local e-newsletter for future details.
