Hampshire Solent Museums Tweetup - more use than a chocolate umbrella
A jolly good time was had by all at the first ever Hampshire Solent museums Tweetup, at The Vestry bar in Southampton.
What's a Tweetup? It's when online contacts meet face to face to network.
Some of the most proficient museum Tweeters in the area were there, generously exchanging success stories and tips. Some complete and relative newbies were there too, taking the opportunity to talk to others about how they are using social media to involve new audiences in their museums and collections.
Our first Hampshire Solent museums Tweetup was scheduled to coincide with #MuseumMonday #MuseumHour and #MuseumWeek, creating the opportunity to learn about how hashtag hours work and would like to try one out in a friendly supportive environment.
Our venue was The Vestry Bar in Southampton, chosen as a relaxed social environment with a heritage feel - it's a converted church decorated with reproductions of works of art from around the world. And on a Monday night we pretty much had it to ourselves!
The creativity of attendees was amply demonstrated in the 'make a badge that reflects your museum' competition. Prizes for both best badge (box of chocolates) and runner up (chocolate umbrella) went to National Motor Museum - Angela and Sarah respectively - but they do have a badge making machine.
We took part in #MuseumHour and #MuseumWeek online discussions about museum evaluation, exchanged social media tips and tools, networked and told ghost stories. All agreed we'll do it again! We'll also be delighted to share tips with anyone else thinking of organising a museum Tweetup. Ask us via the Help Hub.
