What was the Project aim(s)?

To review of our current retail plans and methodologies and to seek advice on how these could be improved

What was the impact of the project?

Chris from Secondary Spend was really helpful in providing critical advice on our retail plans. On the strength of her suggestions, we have completely re-planned how we organise our stock. Rather than focusing on types of customer (say, having an area for kids and an area for adults) we now have areas which mirror our collection. Within each area there will be something which will interest all of our different types of visitors. Chris advised that we really should make the most of our collection and create some bespoke lines. Out of this advice we have created two new lines focusing on Tunbridge Ware and Subbuteo. Our MDO has been hugely supportive in this area, giving some additional funding to pay for design and artist fees. Chris was also helpful in suggesting suppliers. Using these contacts, I have been in touch with some of the big national museums who have been really helpful in helping us to source products. 

What went well and what didn’t go well?

The meeting I had with Chris went really well and it was great having someone of her experience on hand to talk to. Chris will be returning to museum shortly to train our Front of House staff and to look over our plans. 

Top Tips

Speak to your MDO about funding for production implementation! Order small and see what sells best. Some things will sell well while others won’t. Concentrate on the successes and do all that you can to get rid of the failures. If you can at least get the cost price back, you can re-invest it in something that sells better.

What are your plans for the future?

Chris will be returning to take some training with the Front of House Staff.

£1,550 (£1,200 consultancy support, £350 product implementation)
