    Looking for a display case

We are looking for a display case that allows the display of small to medium sized objects, either a vertical one or, preferably, a deep table top case. We aim to have a small (supervised) display in a new welcoming area at the local railway station that would give a taster of local history and draw people to the museum and gallery.

    Wi-fi

We're recently had wi-fi fitted throughout the New Forest Centre but are delaying opening it up to the public because of fears about IT security. Does anyone have experience of offering public wi-fi and how this impacts on their IT security? Thanks

Hi - one of your colleagues alerted me to this forum, so I thought I would post our details. Collecteco works with companies and other organisations to donate unwanted, good quality office furniture, equipment and materials to good causes (and what could be a better cause than a museum I hear you say!!!). We work with allsorts of different commercial premises, so if your organisation needs office furniture, equipment or materials, then please send an email to wishlist@collecteco.co.uk and we'll send details if we have it or let you know if it on the horizon with a project starting soon. Advice/Tips/Examples of recent planned Collection storage move

Dear All, I am currently trying to put together a project plan that will allow me plan and manage the move of a number of various artefact stores that are scattered across a large site (some items are large and heavy) into better storage. This will form part of a collection review also. As part of this process I am looking for case studies where I can learn from previous experiences and even maybe pinch methodology, visit their store/site and chat with staff etc. If anyone has a good example of a museum that has undertaken something similar in the past few years/is willing to discuss/share experience/guidance with me the above then please get in touch. Thank you all in advance and I look forward to hearing about some wonderful projects. Gillian Mason Curator Bletchley Park Trust

    Visitor Survey Apps

Could anyone recommend a good visitor survey app that can be displayed on an android tablet? Following years of paper surveys we have recently bought a tablet to help improve efficiency of data gathering, analysis of data and reduce storage. If anyone else has experimented with tablet based surveys we would greatly appreciate any recommendations.

Artistic input required for unusual lighting scupture project

For our new display at Leith Hill Place near Dorking I want to create a musical mobile/light fitting. I am imagining a conglomeration/explosion of musical notes and symbols made from lightweight laser cut material. I have sourced a plain light fitting (see image) which could form the basis of the piece. I need someone artistic who could take on this challenge and create something amazing(for minimal or no fee!)

    Free desktop display case

We have a display case free to a good home. Desktop style, quite modern. Measurements are: Length = 160cm Depth = 59cm Height = 111cm The lid does have a lock but we no longer have the key. Replacing the lock should be possible. The light inside could also do with an electrician looking at it. We have used the case without a lock in an area where it can be watched by staff, or to contain non-collections items when it isn't visible at all times. The lid is heavy and takes at least 2 people to lift, so theft is only an issue for the determined criminal! We need it gone asap, so please do get in touch if you can offer it a good home.

    Mapping filing cabinet vertical

Floor space is at a premium in our small museum so an upright mapping chest is what we need we think. The maps that are rolled and getting damaged are local to old Sheppey so need to be protected. Any advice about how to store them and exhibit them at the same time would be appreciated.

    Work Experience in museums

At Brading Roman Villa we have students on work experience every week. I think that it would be good for museums to work together to develop a programme for students so that we achieve high quality learning outcomes without each of us having to do it all ourselves. I taught for 25 years and know what is needed and have a programme for this museum. I am willing to share this with others and ask for any suggestions on what you do

Supplier of Victorian/Edwardian/1920s-style radiator valves needed

Can anyone, particularly colleagues based in historic buildings with C19th/early C20th heating systems, suggest any suppliers of 'heritage' radiator valves similar to the one pictured? Neither we nor our contractor have been able to source aesthetically suitable replacements in the main supplier catalogues so we're hoping that others with similar requirements can point us in a new direction. Thanks very much.

    Free Museum Entry

We're thinking of introducing free entry to the New Forest Centre Museum in early 2016 after decades of charging. Perhaps you've already trialled free entry? Perhaps it worked really well or perhaps not. Either way, we'd be keen to learn from your experiences.

    MODES

I am a volunteer at Emsworth Museum and we currently have a very old version of MODES which is not very user friendly and is not being used to its full ability. I have undertaken to investigate whether we should get the current version or switch to software which will be more suited to volunteer staff who will just be indexing material occasionally. I would be interested in hearing from any other museums run by volunteers about their experience of MODES. Which version of MODES do you have and do you find it easy to use? Do you have one person who deals with the recoding of acquisitions cataloguing and indexing and are all your different categories of materials all put on to the system? Are there any volunteers who have been fully trained on the use of MODES? Is your collection searchable on the web? Lastly would you recommend MODES for museums of our type where there are no full time staff? I would be very grateful for your comments and hope you can don’t mind sparing some time to answer my questions. email ms.taplin@yahoo.co.uk

    Comparator museums wanted

A small museum in South Wales is working on an HLF transition funding bid. HLF has asked for some comparator museums to provide evidence for sustainability, such as income figures for similar museums, to show they can afford to keep the doors open once their money runs out. They need examples which are: - mainly volunteer run, with perhaps one or two members of staff and preferably tick one of these boxes: - visitor numbers c 40,000 - social/ local history - have a shop/ café/ membership scheme/ membership charge Are there any such museums in SE England who would be willing to share this type of data? It would be much appreciated.
