Conservation in Kent & Medway

The Surrey, East & West Sussex, Kent & Medway Preventive Conservation Officer, Emily Nisbet-Hawkins. Emily works Monday, Tuesday and alternate Wednesdays, the rest of the week she is Conservator at the National Trust. Emily supports our museums through free guidance and training on a range of topics such as:

  • Environmental monitoring and control
  • Collections, monitoring, packing and storage
  • Pest management
  • Object handling and transportation
  • Help with supply and ordering of specialist material and equipment
  • Advice on organising remedial conservation and finding suitable conservators

Conservation priorities

  • Site visits to museums - these visits are available to provide advice on specific conservation problems or concerns that you may have
  • Continuing a programme of small training sessions, targeted at the specific needs of the museum - topics include object handling, packing museum objects, pest identification and management, and environmental monitoring
  • Completing Preventative Conservation Audits, which asses the needs of the museums regarding environmental monitoring, light control, pest management, storage and display etc. Recommendations will be provided and help with any adjustments that need to be made will provided
  • Helping museums achieve good conservation standards in line with Accreditation and to help with Accreditation applications
  • Administering the Conservation Resources Bank in Chatham and Fishbourne - ensuring all museums know about and use the free resources that are available
